摘要:Memory traces of specific events are not only found at the level of individual neurons, but also in “engram patterns” of larger brain networks. Using intracranial EEG recordings in epilepsy patients, we observed that engram patterns are reinstantiated during memory retrieval. Healthy participants showed that engram patterns are spontaneously replayed during awake resting state and sleep, suggesting a putative mechanism for memory consolidation. Analyzing content-specific representations may also be clinically relevant to identify early pathophysiology in Alzheimer’s disease. Using fMRI in genetic AD risk carriers for Alzheimer’s disease, we observed impaired entorhinal grid cell-like representations and altered navigational strategies. Together, these studies shed light on the neural basis of intact and disturbed content-specific representations in humans.
