    Mapping Brain Functional Networks in Individuals for Personalized Medicine

    Dr. Hesheng Liu is an Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School and Director of the Laboratory For the Study of the Brain Basis of Individual Differences at Massachusetts General Hospital. He received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees from Tsinghua University. His research focuses on developing novel neuroimaging and computational tools to reveal brain functional architecture in individual subjects. A major goal of his work is to localize functional networks in individual subjects to guide surgical intervention. Another theme in his lab is to identify personalized neuromodulation targets for brain disorders and study functional changes in individual patients after neuromodulation treatments. He has published over 60 papers in scientific journals including Nature Neuroscience, Neuron, PNAS, JAMA Psychiatry, etc.
     
    Abstract
    A major obstacle for exploring subtle aspects of network organization and translating insights into clinical applications is the lack of tools for mapping networks in individual subjects. We evaluated inter-individual variability in brain functional organization and developed a novel brain parcellation approach to accurately map functional regions at the individual level using resting-state fMRI. Based on the subject-specific functional regions, we were able to identify connectivity markers for cognitive ability in healthy subjects and clinical symptoms in various psychiatric disorders. These individually-identified functional circuits may lead to novel, personalized targets for neuromodulation treatments. Finally, I will briefly discuss our data on evaluating the effect of deep brain stimulation on individual patients’ functional networks.
